List of the Cheapest Healthy Food You Can Buy

I thought I would make a list of 20 of the cheapest healthy food that you can get. This is an excellent start to lowering your food budget.

Here’s the thing, you are going to be focusing on unpackaged foods. And for a good reason or two. Packaged foods – anything that comes in a package, bag, or box, usually have additives and sugars added to them to improve taste.

As you know, sugars and refined carbs are the usual culprit to expanding waistlines.

So without further ado, here is the first 10 cheapest healthy food on the list:

  1. Oats - this grain is high in fiber and complex carbs. And besides, studies have proven that oats can lower cholesterol. Lastly, oats are fairly cheap. You can add nuts and fruits with your bowl of oatmeal in the morning.
  2. Eggs – eggs is a good source of protein and cheap to boot. You can do so many things with the eggs… boil them, fry them or poach them. I suggest having a supply of hard boiled eggs in the refridgerator so you have something to snack on when you are hungry.
  3. Kale – this is a dark leafy green that is jam packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants. Add to salads or stir-fry.
  4. Potatoes – For a good reason, potatoes have been the villians. And why? Well, potatoes chips and french frys are very unhealthy forms of snack foods. However, if you prepare them as boiled or baked… then they are a very healthy source of foods. Tip: eat potatoes with their skins on. Better yet, eat sweet potatoes… they are less likely to spike your blood sugar.
  5. Apples – I love apples and I eat 1 or 2 each day. You can do so many things with them. From cutting the apple up and eating with almonds. I also chop up an apple to add to my protein shakes.
  6. Nuts - I am talking about unroasted and unsalted nuts. You can find them in the baking department of the stores in large bags. Keep them airtight until you eat them. Although nuts have a high fat content, it is GOOD fats. And your body needs them. Nuts are high in protein.
  7. Bananas – Bananas are fairly cheap as fruits go. Great for snacks or smoothies.
  8. Garbanzo Beans – These beans are a pretty good source of proteins and fiber. But for those who don’t like this type of bean… there are others such as black beans, lima beans and lentils beans. It does take time to prepare these beans but the results are worth it. And besides, you can’t possibly get any cheaper than the good old beans.
  9. Broccoli - one of the most nutrition dense veggie that you can get. It has it all. And it is a very versatile food item. You can either cook broccoli or eat them fresh.
  10. Watermelon – The watermelon is one of the largest and cheapest fruit that you can get. It is full of water but watermelons do fill you up. Which can be a very good way to hydrate yourself and push yourself away from the table feeling full without all the extra calories.

I will cover the next 10 cheapest healthy food in this blog next week.

Until then, stay healthy and eat well!

Matt
